At Pittsburgh Laundry Systems, we know laundry equipment inside and out—but we also know the story behind it. Laundromats are more than just rows of machines; they’re part of a rich history of innovation, community, and convenience. Whether you’re a laundromat owner, investor, or customer, understanding where this industry started helps us appreciate just how far it’s come—and where it’s heading next.
Before the Spin Cycle
Laundry hasn’t always been as simple as loading a machine and pressing a button. Before modern appliances, laundry was an all-day, hands-on chore. In the early 1900s, many people still scrubbed their clothes by hand, boiling water on stoves and using washboards in basins or bathtubs.
For those who could afford it, sending clothes to commercial laundries was common, but for the average household, it was labor-intensive and time-consuming. The idea of a place where you could go to wash your own clothes—quickly and affordably—was still just a dream.

Enter the Washateria
That dream became a reality in 1934, when the first self-service laundry facility opened in Fort Worth, Texas. Dubbed a “Washateria,” it allowed customers to rent time on electric washing machines. It was the first of its kind and quickly caught on across the U.S.
By the 1950s, as urban populations grew and more apartment living meant fewer in-home washers, self-service laundromats became a staple of American cities—including right here in Pittsburgh. Coin-operated machines became the norm, offering affordable and efficient laundry for families, students, and workers alike.
Laundromats have always played a role in community life. They’re gathering places, social hubs, and small businesses rolled into one. In Pittsburgh’s tight-knit neighborhoods—from Bloomfield to Brookline—laundromats became part of the weekly rhythm. They were where neighbors exchanged stories, kids helped fold clothes, and regulars became familiar faces.
Even today, many laundromats in Western PA remain family-run or locally owned. At Pittsburgh Laundry Systems, we’re proud to support these businesses with reliable equipment, design expertise, and service they can count on.

Innovation Keeps Spinning
Laundromats have changed with the times. From the coin-only machines of the past to today’s card-operated and app-controlled systems, convenience and efficiency have always led the way. Eco-friendly washers, energy-saving dryers, Wi-Fi-enabled monitoring, and mobile payment systems are just a few of the modern upgrades revolutionizing the industry.
At Pittsburgh Laundry Systems, we specialize in helping laundromat owners stay ahead of the curve—with modern, high-efficiency equipment and tailored solutions that fit the needs of your space and community.

Looking Ahead
The future of laundromats is bright. As urban living continues to rise and more consumers look for convenient, reliable services, laundromats remain a smart investment and a vital community asset. Whether you’re building from the ground up or upgrading an existing store, knowing the roots of this industry helps inspire a vision for what’s next.
